STEMagic - A 2010 Institute Fellows Project*

Author: Peggy Hartwig, Sarah Streitz

PROJECT SUMMARY:

"Closing the STE...M Gap: Using 21st century Technology to Integrate Mathematics Effectively"

Each one of my 140 Students created two 21st century STEM projects, with the goal of “Closing the STE....M Gap,” deconstructing applications from science and engineering classes, creating a “bridge” between the mathematical theory/ algorithm and the scientific application.  Because of my enthusiasm and support, encouraging research, problem solving, presenting and publishing, my students have become fluent with utilizing multiple web tools and web resources, further preparing themselves for 21st century learning and living,
We have published the best projects on our public wiki, which is now becoming an international tool used to close this STE…M gap by both science and math teachers from around the nation, (while gaining international momentum), seamlessly integrating mathematics, improving students’ understanding and retention.

*As a component of the Siemens STEM Institute professional development program, Fellows work in small groups to collaborate on a STEM-related project throughout the following school year. These projects utilize the collaborative Web 2.0 tools that Fellows learn about during their week at the Institute to further student learning in the classroom. The project presented here is one of the projects done by a group from the 2010 Siemens STEM Institute Fellows.
